A lot of artists I look up to had studied at Cut Above, and I had heard that Cut Above was good.
I currently freelance as a hair-stylist and makeup artist specializing in pinup and vintage. All of the different modules and techniques taught me the groundwork for lots of different styles. It helped me get in to my previous role as an assistant and build my confidence to branch out into freelance work.
My work involves going to people’s homes to do their hair and makeup for events. I do people up for balls, birthday parties, weddings, bridal parties and even concerts.
The most exciting aspect of my job is the travel opportunities. I have travelled to England to do make at a wedding and I occasionally travel around New Zealand for events and bridal parties. Another exciting part of my job is the reaction a person has after a makeover.
Having the opportunity to make someone feel confident and beautiful is really special and I get to do that.
The highlights of my course were the era modules. I really enjoyed looking at the history of makeup and where trends came from, as well as the connections I made at Cut Above. I made good friendships through Cut above, being around other artists.
A lesson I have learned is that something may look amazing on someone but if they don't feel comfortable then don't be upset if you have to change it. I used to take it personally when someone didn't like a certain thing but sometimes people come in with a reference photo, you do it and actually they don't like it and it’s a better experience for them to change it and leave happy.
