What attracted you to study at NZIS?

I always had a passion for sport and fitness. University at the time was attractive, but I wanted qualifications. My partner’s friend was at NZIS, and it made sense that I could get the certificates I needed to pursue my career.

How has your course at NZIS helped you?

The knowledge I’ve learnt at NZIS has been great, and I can apply it in my work today. The practical components were also really helpful in giving me hands-on experience.

Where are you working now? And what is your role?

I’m the Assistant Club Manager at Snap Fitness, Bush Inn. Christchurch. I also do personal training with clients.

What does your work involve?

Updating social media, calling new leads (memberships), gym maintenance, business administration and interacting with both members and clients.

What is the most exciting aspect of your job?

I really enjoy personal training - helping and improving my clients. And as Assistant Club Manager – undertaking member community driven activities.

Did your course at NZIS live up to your expectations?

Yes – the academic curriculum was a big help.

How did you feel when you were coming to NZIS? What was campus life like?

Initially I was intimidated by the established students, because I’m a shy person. But the NZIS campus was the best way to meet people.

What were the highlights of your course?

I really enjoyed my second Diploma, when we started to specialise more in the areas of the sport, fitness and recreation industry. High performance and the sports exchange with the other NZIS campuses around the nation.

What is your career goal?

I’d love to work with High Performance Sport New Zealand.

What is one life lesson you learnt during your study and work?

“Things may be tough now, but if you stick at it and put in the effort you’ll come out the other side.”
