Matt Megaw knew he always wanted to be in sport, whether it was playing, coaching or teaching. It wasn’t until a friend recommended the Personal Training course at New Zealand Institute of Sport that Matt knew he would enjoy studying towards a practical career. He describes NZIS as; community orientated, encouraging, and competitive.
“NZIS is different to your typical tertiary education. Because the class sizes s are smaller you get to know your tutors and peers a lot better than you usually would.” Whether you have a problem that was education related or personal, tutors were always there to offer help”.
Matt is now working at the Auckland University Rugby Football Club as their Rugby Development Officer. The opportunity allows him to remain challenged with management and practical tasks. He is currently overseas playing and coaching Rugby in the south of Spain.
When speaking about his learning experience, Matt attributes his growth in confidence to NZIS. “It allowed me to excel in my areas within sport. I heavily enjoy being a part of a team environment and see challenges as something I can overcome and achieve.”
The decision to select a course is not always easy, however, Matt says after speaking to a tutor about the practicality of the course, individual time with the tutors, and some goal-mapping, the path was clear.
When asked what the best piece of advice Matt has for new students he said… “Say yes to every opportunity that comes your way. Being able to put myself out there and show willingness to help others and achieve has allowed me to grow as a person and push outside my comfort zone.”
