Level 4 graduate William Thompson first became involved in healthcare back in South Africa, after his elderly mother moved in to a retirement home.
“Not long after her transition, retirement homes in South Africa lost their funding from the government, so myself among others stepped in to help. I assisted many residents with their shopping needs or took them to visit friends.
“Even when Mum passed, I still helped out at the home. Eventually, my daughter suggested I move to New Zealand where she was living and continue this line of work in Auckland. I ended up joining VisionWest Community Trust as a Healthcare Assistant and have never looked back. I love the care work I do.”
William’s position involves providing personal care for elderly gentlemen, including helping with house cleaning and shopping. He also offers support to patients with dementia.
“Helping people is so important to me. Those I care for become my friends. It really makes my day when I am able to bring a smile to a client’s face.”
After completing initial study with his employer, William was encouraged to enrol in the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Support) (Level 4) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC).
“My workplace has recommended the Level 4 program to others in the past. They suggested I enrol as it would provide me with up-to-date knowledge and a deeper understanding of healthcare, in order to grow and develop in my role as a carer.
“I can honestly say now that I am truly blessed to have been a student with NZTC.”
Navigating online study and assignments was a learning curve for William, however NZTC staff were there to provide support at every step.
“I want to thank everyone, from IT Help to my lecturers. I can only give praise and appreciation for the support I received. With their guidance, I was able to successfully complete my assignments with greater confidence.”
